When "Echo Beach" became an international hit
in 1980, people would write in, wondering if the song had
been named after the beach of the same name in their part
of the world. However, "Echo Beach" was a figment
of Mark Gane's imagination. He wasn't aware of a real Echo
Beach when he wrote the song in 1978.
Over the years, the name has been adopted by a club in San
Francisco, a development property in Bali, a German
record label, a Toronto boutique, a gay porno film, an Irish
show jumping horse, a hotel in Zanzibar, a tall
bearded Iris, a Britsh television series...Australia is heavily
represented with a tourist park, solar-powered youth
hostel and Alpaca farm. (See the "Song Stories"
section for how the lyrics to Echo Beach came about.)
