Was it CFNY-FM or CHUM-FM who first broke Martha and the Muffins on Toronto radio in the late seventies? Martha and Mark were asked to settle the debate which took place December 6th on Radiopro, an email subscription service run by Canadian radio veteran Warren Cosford as a forum for music industry pros.

While the term "breaking" a band on radio has no strict definition, it was CFNY who first promoted the band on radio when Keith Elshaw, a CFNY DJ, played SUBURBAN DREAM and INSECT LOVE from MatM's 1979 indie release of the same name. Keith had mixed the two songs for the band as well as several others from the same session MatM had recorded in June 1978. Nevertheless, CHUM-FM was hot on CFNY's heels, playing MatM's indie disc as well as hosting a MatM live broadcast from Toronto's Palais Royale on June 18, 1980.
