Martha and Mark were asked by Triptych Media producer Anna
Stratton and film director Tim Southam to provide a theme
song for a key scene in Southam's feature film debut, THE
BAY OF LOVE AND SORROWS, based on the novel by Giller Award
and Governor General's Award winner David Adams Richards.
Because of the film's setting in New Brunswick's Miramichi
region in 1973, Director Tim Southam felt the theme song should
embody a slightly earlier, late 60's feel: "
essentially
a driving acoustic guitar riff coupled with a close-miked
raw female voice." Producer Anna Stratton adds: "
this
is a very dark tale, a moral fable, a modern tragedy."
As such, the theme song had to reinforce the new sense of
optimism of one of the main characters while also hinting
at darker things to come.
As it turned out, Martha and Mark had already composed a
song that worked perfectly for the scene in question. THERE
COMES A DAY was written in Bath, England during the MODERN
LULLABY sessions (MatM's seventh studio album released in
1992), but not included on that album. Martha reworked the
lyrics to reflect the film character's state of mind and the
song was rerecorded in a matter of days with more of a late
sixties feel. Everyone was very pleased with the results and
moviegoers can judge for themselves when THE BAY OF LOVE AND
SORROWS is released in Autumn 2002.
