There was a road a few miles from our house in the west end
of Toronto when I was a teenager called "Radio Valve
Road". I always liked the name - it seemed so mysterious.
I don't know this for sure, but I always thought that perhaps
a factory from the 30's or 40's must have been on the site
that made tubes for radios or "valves" as the English
call them. One day I was driving in that area and noticed
that the street's name had been changed to something really
boring like "Monotone Place". I immediately thought,
"Whatever happened to Radio Valve Rd.?", and that
became the title of the instrumental that the band composed.
There is little respect for the past in Ontario, in spite
of all the rhetoric about "heritage". If it's over
50 years old, it often gets torn down or changed, like this
strange and evocative name.
