Only You (From the MatM album ‘The World Is A Ball’ 1986)

Shot on a shoestring budget by Mark and Martha on black and white Super 8 film, and edited by their friend Bob Kennedy, ‘Only You’ remains their personal favourite from all the MatM videos done in the 80s. At the time, Mark wrote this about making the video:

“If nothing else, the late 20th Century can be characterized by its state of perpetual crisis. Every day we view the extraordinary events and images of this ongoing crisis through the window of television. Medical miracles, the clichés of soap opera romance, the aftermath of a terrorist bombing, humans in outer space; these “commonplace” moments inspired the song ‘Only You’. At once a personal and global love song, ‘Only You’ is a reminder that we are masters of our own destiny. In reflecting our troubled era, the lyrics embrace both human intimacy and the Apocalypse.”

After its initial release in March,1987, ‘Only You’ received considerable critical acclaim, influencing the look of several subsequent television commercials and winning “Best Music Video” at the 1897 Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival as well as being nominated for “Best Video” at the Junos Awards the same year.
